Decoding the Standards

What is the AA Standard?

Level AA is the mid-range standard for web accessibility. It requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18pt or 14pt bold). This is the baseline for most corporate and government websites.

What is the AAA Standard?

Level AAA is the highest level of accessibility. It requires a ratio of 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. It is designed to be readable for people with vision as low as 20/80.

Luminance Calculation

Contrast is calculated using the relative luminance of colors. This accounts for how the human eye perceives brightness across the RGB spectrum (where green is perceived as much brighter than blue).

Large Text Definition

WCAG defines large text as anything 18pt and larger, or 14pt and larger if the text is bold. For digital displays, this roughly translates to 24px normal or 18.66px bold.

Does this tool work with RGBA?

Currently, we process HEX values for precision. For transparent colors, we recommend calculating the flattened hex color against your primary background for an accurate ratio.

Why did my favorite color fail?

Vibrant colors like light blue or bright yellow often have high luminance, making them difficult to read on white backgrounds. Try darkening the color slightly to hit the 4.5:1 mark.

Is legal compliance mandatory?

In many regions (like the EU with EN 301 549 and the US with Section 508), meeting Level AA is a legal requirement for public-facing websites and software.
