Decoding the Standards

What is the AA Standard?

Level AA is the mid-range standard for web accessibility. It requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18pt or 14pt bold). This is the baseline for most corporate and government websites.

What is the AAA Standard?

Level AAA is the highest level of accessibility. It requires a ratio of 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. It is designed to be readable for people with vision as low as 20/80.

Luminance Calculation

Contrast is calculated using the relative luminance of colors. This accounts for how the human eye perceives brightness across the RGB spectrum (where green is perceived as much brighter than blue).
